Indonesia Shares to Shine in 2012's 2nd Half

VIVAnews – Although the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) is temporary interrupted by the serious crisis in Europe, a number of shares are predicted to gain profit after the crisis passes. 

Trimegah Securities’ research revealed that the nation’s capital market will be affected by the European policy, which will trigger a high volatility until I-2012 term. 

“The downgrade impact is more structural. This is just an indicator, the Eurozone issue is not yet solved,” said President Director of Trimegah Securities, Omar S Anwar, to VIVAnews in Jakarta.

Omar believed that the impact on the national capital market will only last until the end of the first half of 2012. Meanwhile, the second half of 2012 will witness the era of Indonesia’s market rise. 

“There will be a revival from local companies, namely those in LQ-45. There will be fundamental correction, but the companies will resurface,” he said. 

Trimegah expected that the infrastructure sector will shine the most after the downgrade effect glides away.

Earlier, Trimegah research predicted that foreign investors may withdraw their fund from Indonesia temporarily. This is caused by the economic condition in Europe that has worsened as debt rank was downgraded in 9 European countries. 

The steps taken by fund manager, especially French investors, in withdrawing their fund is viewed as a normal step for companies who wanted to save their domestic investment.

Indonesia Cannot Yet Make Heavy-weight Tanks

VIVAnews – Chief of Indonesian Army, Pramono Edhie Wibowo, stated that Indonesia is still unable to manufacture tanks of similar quality as Leopard.

“We can’t manufacture heavy-weight tanks yet,” said General Edhie today, Jan 18.

Edhie said that there are three tank qualifications, which are: light, middle and heavy.  Indonesia’s current technology is still trying to manufacture the middle-weight tanks. 

Edhie explained that out of 11 Army cavalry battalions, the latest 2 battalions have Scorpion tanks. 

“It’s a light-weight tank and made in the 50s.  We are lacking behind when it comes to tanks,” he said. 

Right now, the Army is cooperating with PT Pindad to upgrade 13 AMF tanks to middle-weight tanks. Edhie expected technology upgrade which may enable foreign technology to be applicable in the manufacturing of heavy-weight tanks. 

However, Edhie confirmed that the decision to purchase Leopard tanks is not yet final as the Netherlands is basically going to replace the Leopard tanks. 

“They have around 150 spare tanks. We are given the opportunity to see and choose and determine the prices,” he said. 

“The tanks are kept in a warehouse. The sooner we get approval, the faster Indonesia can purchase the tanks,” he added. 

The government’s plan to purchase Leopard tanks from the Netherlands has raised pros and cons. Some parties claimed that the European tanks are not compatible with the actual condition in Indonesia. 

Others argued that Indonesia can purchase tanks tagged with more affordable prices as the European countries are under serious debt crisis.

Indonesia Police Uncover Int'l Drug Syndicate

VIVAnews – The National Police have exposed another international drugs syndicate. Police spokesperson, Chief. Comm. Boy Rafli Amar, stated that this syndicate has been smuggling drugs to Indonesia through traditional ports.

“The small ports are out of the officer’s reach,” said Boy on Friday, Jan 20. The exposure began from an arrest of 6 foreigners on January 16. They were suspected to be part of an international drugs network. 

The six foreigners were caught on the waters of Ujung Genteng, Sukabumi, about 80 kilometers away from Pelabuhan Ratu port. Boy said that at first the police arrested 5 people on land. Then they apprehended another suspect who was carrying methamphetamine in a small boat. 

“But because of big waves, the boat tipped over and all evidences were lost,” Boy said.  After arresting these men, the police gained leads, for example their communication patterns.  So now the police are able to map out their network. 

Based on this lead, the Directorate of Drugs has conducted a stake out since last month. Police are informed about the drugs shipping, so early this morning around 01.35 a.m., the police were successful in arresting 4 other suspects who just arrived from an international waters via a large vessel before they transferred to a smaller vessel to the port. 

Boy said that there were gunshots between the police and the suspects, resulting in the death of 3 suspects.   

“The victims came from their side and their bodies were taken to the nearest health center,” he said. 

Police secured a number of evidences in the form of methamphetamine and three firearms from the arrest.  “We are still investigating the amount of meth and firearms found,” Boy said.

He confessed that the police are still unable to catch other suspects because they are positioned in the international waters.  Boy added that the people who pick and escort them are also foreigners.  “We are still unable to reveal the nationality, but it is clear that they’re all foreigner citizens,” he said.
