Another Sumatran Tiger Killed, Sperm Bottled

VIVAnews – A Sumatran Tiger died in great pain at Safari Park in Cisarua, Bogor, West Java.  Blood flowed all over its body from several wounds.

The tiger named Rajo was 5 years old. The male tiger was spotted by a conservation officer at Lebong forest in Mangkurajo, Bengkulu earlier this week.

Rajo was found in poor condition. It was trapped by hunters in the forest. Its left leg was entangled by steel wire while many spear and bullet wounds were everywhere in its body.

The tiger arrived in Safari Park on Thursday, Jan 12 for treatment.  An officer of Safari Park, Retno Sudarwati described the sufferings of the rare tiger when it arrived in Cisarua. Retno said that Rajo was seriously injured. The left leg was almost severed from the body and the leg bone stood out.

Retno said that the spear and bullet wounds infected the tiger’s body. Its left eye was blind and its right eye was also damaged.

“After the medical team treated the tiger for more than 48 hours, it finally passed away on Saturday, Jan 14,” Retno told VIVAnews, yesterday, Jan 17.

Even though the medical team couldn’t save Rajo’s life, they managed to collect its sperm.  The medical team wants to use Rajo’s sperm for insemination.

“The sperm will be injected to another tiger to create new embryo,” said the Director of Safari Park, Frans Manansang.
